    Abstract:

    Nutrition plays an important role in life, especially for the elderly population. Nowadays, the increasingly mentioned term is proper nutrition. Proper nutrition means consuming three main meals and two snacks daily, which should provide an adequate amount primarily of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, as well as vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These elements satisfy the body’s daily energy needs and maintain its normal functions. The body, as it ages, is exposed to numerous physiological, psychological, and social changes.

    Biological changes involve slowing down and weakening of all body functions, psychological changes include decline in mental functions and adaptation to aging, while social changes refer to the individual’s changes in relation to their environment. These changes reduce nutrient intake and normal digestion, leading to muscle mass loss which causes decreased muscle strength and loss of independence in the elderly. Besides loss of strength and independence, inadequate nutrition is associated with numerous diseases common in this stage of life.
