Abstract:
Today, in the modern age we live in, inequalities in society are more present and visible than ever before. Although the most visible are material inequalities, the most painful for every person are moral inequalities because they are embedded in the human psyche and shaped throughout life. Ideally, every human being should be valued, granted equality in society, freedom, and dignity. Unfortunately, societal values change slowly because each individual must first change their way of thinking about their attitude toward others, and then act accordingly.
Along these lines, Prof. Dr. Slađana Štrkalj-Ivezić wrote a book as part of the project by the “Svitanje” Association – Protection of the Rights of People with Mental Illness – which aims to educate the community about mental illness and ways to provide support to patients and their families. The book is written in 85 pages and includes a review of the literature used. The book clearly highlights different concepts such as stigma, self-stigmatization, and prejudice, which we encounter daily in our attitudes toward people with mental illness.
