Abstract:
Research objective
To present the total number and demographic data of patients with COVID-19 treated at the Clinical Hospital Center (KBC) Rijeka, the proportion of patients who required hospital admission and invasive mechanical ventilation, the mortality rate, and the duration of hospital treatment.
Research methods
Retrospectively collected data included 1,739 patients with COVID-19 treated at KBC Rijeka in the period from March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021. The data was collected from the IBIS database and processed and graphically displayed using Microsoft Office Excel and Prism 10 for Mac OS.
Results
Out of 1,739 patients with SARS-CoV-2, 1,192 (68.55%) were treated on an outpatient basis, while 547 (31.45%) required hospital admission. Of these, 146 (26.69%) patients required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). The majority of hospitalized patients were male (64.17%) and older than 65 years (66.54%). The median duration of hospital treatment was 9.75 days, and 19.01% of hospitalized patients stayed more than 15 days in the hospital. Of the hospitalized patients, 62.34% recovered, while 37.66% died. Among the 206 deceased patients, 129 (62.62%) were men and 77 (37.38%) were women. The youngest deceased patient was 27 years old and had spent 9 days in the hospital; the oldest was 100 years old and had spent 1 day in the hospital.
Conclusion
In the analyzed period, the mortality rate from SARS-CoV-2 infection among hospitalized patients at KBC Rijeka was high, amounting to 37.66%.
